Truegard GL-5 Gear Lubricants are premium quality GL-5 rated gear oils blended from highly refined high Viscosity Index base stocks. Truegard Gear Lubricants, through the combination of highly refined base oils and up-to-date additive technology, are more economical than oils of lesser quality and lower initial cost. Equipment life may be longer and more trouble-free, and maintenance cost and downtime may be significantly reduced through the use of Truegard Gear Lubricants in conjunction with a dedicated preventive maintenance program.

Truegard GL-5 Gear Lubricants are available in 3 multi-viscosity grades with a Limited Slip option to comply with most automotive and truck applications. They provide excellent load carrying capability, oxidation stability, rust and corrosion resistance and anti-foam protection. Dyed Red for ease of leak detection and contains tackifier for added adhesiveness.

FEATURES

• Formulated with sulfur-phosphorus EP additives to provide anti-wear and anti-scuff performance. • Excellent oxidation resistance

• Rust and corrosion protection for gears and bearings

• Excellent anti-foam properties

• Added tackifier for better adhesiveness

• Dyed Red for ease of leak detection

• Excellent performance in high load operations and also extreme temperatures

APPLICATIONS

Truegard GL-5 Gear Oils are recommended for use in:

• Automotive, On- and off-highway truck and heavy equipment, industrial and agricultural applications

• Conventional and high performance differentials

• Hypoid gear sets

• Transportation gear boxes subject to heavy loads and shock loading

• Gear sets with spur, bevel, spur bevel, spiral bevel, herringbone

• Manual transmissions and gear reducers calling for GL-5 Gear Oil

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about our products and services
  • GL-5 oils contain higher concentrations of sulfur-phosphorus extreme pressure (EP) additives engineered for hypoid gear sets and high-shock-load applications like differentials. GL-4 is typically specified for many manual transmissions, and substituting GL-5 in those applications can potentially damage brass synchronizer components due to the more aggressive EP chemistry - always verify your OEM specification before switching.

  • The Truegard GL-5 line does offer a dedicated Limited Slip variant, but this standard 80W90 does not specify that it contains a friction modifier for limited slip applications. If your axle requires a limited slip additive to prevent chatter and proper clutch pack engagement, check whether the Truegard GL-5 Limited Slip version is the correct choice.

  • The '80W' indicates the oil's low-temperature flow rating (the 'W' stands for winter), meaning the oil pumps adequately in cold conditions, while '90' describes the viscosity at normal operating temperatures. This multi-viscosity range makes the oil suitable for year-round service across a broad temperature spectrum in differentials and gear boxes without needing seasonal oil changes.

  • The red dye allows technicians to quickly pinpoint the source of drivetrain leaks, since gear oil, engine oil, transmission fluid, and other fluids are color-coded differently. The tackifier increases the oil's adhesion to metal gear surfaces, helping it cling rather than being flung off under high-speed or high-load conditions, which provides better protection during initial startup and load spikes.

  • This oil meets API GL-5 and MT-1, MIL-PRF-2105E, SAE J2360, Mack GO-J/GO-H/GO-G, ArvinMeritor 0-76-D (80W-90), and International Truck (Navistar) CEMS B-22. Meeting these specifications means it can be used as a direct fill or top-off fluid in a wide range of commercial trucks and heavy equipment from these manufacturers without voiding factory lubrication requirements.

  • Avoid prolonged skin contact; if contact occurs, rinse the affected area immediately with soap and water. Used gear oil must be collected and disposed of through an authorized recycling or hazardous waste facility and should never be poured down drains or onto the ground.
