Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about our products and services
  • AW stands for Anti-Wear, and 46 refers to the ISO VG 46 viscosity grade - a medium-weight hydraulic fluid widely used in industrial and mobile hydraulic systems operating under typical load and temperature conditions. If your equipment manufacturer specifies ISO VG 46 hydraulic oil, this product is appropriate; for colder environments or high-speed, low-pressure systems, a lighter grade like AW 32 may be preferred, while heavier-duty, high-temperature applications may call for AW 68.

  • Many conventional anti-wear hydraulic oils use zinc-based additives (ZDDP), which can degrade yellow metal components such as copper, brass, and bronze found in pumps, valves, and fittings. A zinc-free formulation protects against wear through alternative additive chemistry, making it safer for systems that contain these sensitive metals or that have strict compatibility requirements for servo valves and proportional valves.

  • Mixing different hydraulic fluids - even of the same viscosity grade - is generally not recommended, as it can compromise the additive packages of both fluids and degrade overall performance. For best results, drain and flush the system before switching to Truegard AW 46, especially if transitioning from a zinc-containing formulation.

  • Truegard AW 46 is engineered for a wide variety of both industrial and mobile hydraulic applications, including machine tools, hydraulic presses, injection molding equipment, agricultural machinery, and construction equipment. It is suitable wherever a premium ISO VG 46 anti-wear hydraulic fluid is specified.

  • Good water separation (demulsibility) means water that enters the system segregates quickly and can be drained, reducing the risk of corrosion and emulsion formation. Strong air release characteristics prevent foam and microbubble buildup, which can cause cavitation - a major source of pump and valve damage - helping to maintain efficient, reliable system operation.

  • Thermal stability means the oil resists breaking down chemically under elevated operating temperatures, which slows oxidation and the formation of varnish, sludge, and acids. This extends the service life of both the fluid and the hydraulic components, supporting longer drain intervals and reduced maintenance costs over time.
