The sulfur component provides extreme pressure (EP) protection by forming a sacrificial film on metal surfaces under load, helping prevent metal-to-metal contact. The fat additive enhances lubricity and film strength, together improving tool life and surface finish quality during operations like tapping and threading.

Paraffin wax can solidify and accumulate in filters and fittings, particularly at lower operating temperatures, restricting flow and requiring more frequent maintenance. Using paraffin-free virgin petroleum base oils helps keep machine lines clear and reduces downtime from clogged components.

Less severe refers to moderate-speed, moderate-pressure cutting operations typical of screw machines and lathes doing drilling, reaming, boring, tapping, and threading. For high-speed or high-pressure operations on hardened or exotic alloys, a heavier-duty cutting fluid with a higher EP additive concentration may be more appropriate.
