Shell Spirax  oils are high performance multigrade extreme-pressure, multipurpose gear lubricants. They are suitable for heavy-duty truck and automotive differentials, manual transmissions and oil lubricated wheel bearings. drive-train gears of heavy-duty automotive, trucking and off-road equipment operated under high-speed/shock load, high-speed/low torque and low-speed/high torque conditions. They meet the requirements of API GL-5 and MIL-PRF-2105E and are available in two SAE viscosity grades: 80W-90 and 85W-140.

Protects hypoid gears against wear and scuffing Multi-viscosity for year round use over wide temperature range Contains a sulfur/phosphorus additive system for excellent load carrying capacity Contains additives to inhibit oil oxidation and keep lubricated parts clean Contains inhibitors to protect against corrosion, rust and foaming. Compatible with other automotive gear oils.
Applications

  • heavy-duty and conventional differentials in heavy and light duty trucks as well as passenger cars
  • conventional manual transmissions calling for API GL-5
  • heavy-duty manual transmissions requiring API MT-1 (SAE 80W-90)
  • hypoid, spur, bevel, helical, spiral-bevel and worm gears in differentials, transmissions, final drives and steering mechanisms
  • industrial gears sets where extreme pressure gear oils are required

Note: cars equipped with limited-slip differentials may require a different lubricant specified by the manufacturer, such as Shell Spirax LS.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about our products and services
  • This gear oil is designed for heavy-duty and light-duty trucks, passenger cars, and off-road equipment. It is suitable for heavy-duty and conventional differentials, manual transmissions, oil-lubricated wheel bearings, and industrial gear sets that require extreme-pressure lubricants. It also covers hypoid, spur, bevel, helical, spiral-bevel, and worm gears in differentials, transmissions, final drives, and steering mechanisms.

  • Cars equipped with limited-slip differentials may require a different lubricant as specified by the manufacturer, such as Shell Spirax LS. This product is not intended for limited-slip differential applications.

  • Both grades are available in this product line. The 85W-140 is a heavier viscosity grade generally better suited for equipment operating under severe high-load or low-speed/high-torque conditions, while the 80W-90 covers a wider range of applications including certain heavy-duty manual transmissions. Always confirm the correct viscosity grade with your vehicle or equipment manufacturer's specifications.

  • Yes, this gear oil is compatible with other automotive gear oils, so it can be used in systems that may contain residual lubricant from a previous fill without requiring a dedicated flush.

  • This oil uses a sulfur/phosphorus additive system that delivers excellent load-carrying capacity and protects hypoid gears against wear and scuffing. It also contains additives to inhibit oil oxidation, keep lubricated parts clean, and protect against corrosion, rust, and foaming — making it well-suited for high-speed/shock load, high-speed/low-torque, and low-speed/high-torque operating conditions.

Key Features

  • Meets API GL-5 and MIL-PRF-2105E specifications, making it suitable for heavy-duty and conventional differentials in heavy and light duty trucks and passenger cars, as well as manual transmissions requiring API GL-5.

  • SAE 85W-140 multigrade formula provides year-round protection across a wide temperature range, suitable for high-speed/shock load, high-speed/low torque, and low-speed/high torque operating conditions.

  • Sulfur/phosphorus additive system delivers excellent load carrying capacity, protecting hypoid gears against wear and scuffing in demanding drive-train applications.

  • Contains oxidation inhibitors to slow oil degradation and keep lubricated parts clean, plus inhibitors to guard against corrosion, rust, and foaming.

  • Compatible with other automotive gear oils and suitable for hypoid, spur, bevel, helical, spiral-bevel, and worm gears in differentials, transmissions, final drives, and steering mechanisms.
