How to Choose the Right Antifreeze for Your Fleet or Shop
Selecting the right antifreeze is about more than freeze protection. The correct formula helps prevent corrosion, control scale buildup, extend water pump life, and protect engine components under heavy loads and wide temperature swings. If you manage multiple makes and models, start with the vehicle or equipment manufacturer's recommendation, then match the coolant type (conventional, OAT, HOAT, ELC) and concentration needed for your climate and service conditions.
What about Concentrate vs. 50/50 Prediluted?
If you want speed and consistency, 50/50 prediluted coolant is the simplest option. It’s ready to pour and helps avoid mixing errors. Concentrate is ideal when you need flexibility, want to dial in a specific freeze point, or prefer to mix with distilled or deionized water. For many shops, concentrate is also the most efficient option when buying in bulk.
Extended Life Coolant (ELC) vs Conventional
Extended Life Coolants are designed for longer service intervals and strong protection in demanding, high-mileage conditions. Conventional coolants can be a solid fit when you follow more frequent maintenance schedules. The key is to stick to one coolant family and follow the recommended change interval for your equipment.
Dex-Cool and OAT Coolants: What to Know Before You Mix
Dex-Cool and other OAT formulas are not always compatible with conventional coolants. Mixing coolant types can reduce corrosion protection and shorten service life. If you are switching coolant families, flush according to the manufacturer's recommendation and refill with the correct type. When in doubt, our team can help you choose the right product for your application.
Bulk Antifreeze FAQ Guide
What antifreeze should I use for my vehicle or equipment?
Start with the manufacturer's recommendation in your owner’s manual. Then match the coolant family (conventional, OAT, HOAT, ELC) and choose concentrate vs 50/50 based on how you prefer to fill and maintain systems.
Can I mix different types or colors of coolant?
It’s not recommended. Color alone is not a reliable indicator of coolant chemistry. Mixing types can reduce protection and shorten coolant life.
What’s the difference between concentrate and 50/50 coolant?
Concentrate must be mixed with water before use. 50/50 is premixed and ready to pour, reducing mixing errors and saving time.
How do I know if I need Extended Life Coolant (ELC)?
ELC is often preferred for heavy-duty applications, longer service intervals, and fleet maintenance programs. Check your equipment requirements and maintenance schedule.
How much coolant is in a 55-gallon drum?
A 55-gallon drum holds 55 gallons of product. If you’re mixing concentrate into a 50/50 blend, the total finished volume depends on your mix ratio.
